About

Stand-offish Eurasian Blue Tit

The Eurasian Blue Tit is one of the smallest tits in Europe and can be spotted all year round. They are usually found in groups of other Blue Tits or Great Tits. One thing that makes them special is that they have been found to have ultraviolet markings on some of their feathers that can be seen by fellow birds and play a role in them finding a partner to mate with. To the human eye they are strikingly green and blue colored.

In my experience, the tinier Eurasian Blue Tits are more feisty and aggressive than Great Tits. That may not be supported by any science but they have yelled at me for just looking at them for too long. Like their "cousins" the males will try to fight their mirror image during springtime. It doesn't matter if they spot themselves in water, a balcony door or a window. If they see a reflection, they get angry. Which unfortunately might lead to them hurting themselves. If you find a dizzy Blue Tit near a window that doesn't seem heavily hurt as if crashing into it but rather confused, make sure there are no predators like Cats around and let them rest for a while. Don't try to grab them, small birds regularly die of heartattacks when being handled by a human.
